The seconds connect minutes which then connect to hours...Where’s the day gone?

Many people are creatures of habit; they have their little routine which must be obeyed such as having a fag and a cup of coffee as soon as they arrive at the office, or switching on the computer and seeing what emails they have.

Surprisingly such routine habits are not often transposed within what you would term as normal business activities. They remain more of a personal preparation or personal welfare, making sure the body and mind are set as best they can be for the day ahead.

Having such habits may be easy to follow or keep a tight rein on if you are employed and working for someone, as there is a structure present you know what the start and finish times are, and you even know what time the breaks are, so you know that time is limited and one fag means one fag.

However having your own business, and being self-employed could mean and result in any habits getting out of hand – because there is no structure a 10-minute break could quite easily turn into a 30-minute break, the checking of email often turns into the forensic examination of each email causing a big and time-consuming distraction.

Working for yourself and reading emails can often result in 2-3 hours passing in a blink of an eye because the natural progression is looking at an email, clicking on a web link then having a read, clicking on another link having another read, have a coffee, have a fag, better check something out by clicking on another link or finish off looking at other emails, and it goes on and on…..!

Unless structured, Social Media is a big distraction for many. People get too involved and too nosy about what others are doing, who they’re connected to, and where they’ve been.

iPhones and Smartphones which allow for the receipt of emails and internet browsing whilst on the move are a good thing, but again unless time and use are structured on such mobile devices this can also prove to be a big distraction.

It’s amazing how everyone’s take on social media is so different, there are those who ‘like’ things because they like to like, and there are those who tweet about absolutely anything such as sitting on a train or waiting at a station.

Then some are more astute and structured and use keywords and phrases which link within their business its products and services so they effectively create an online expert aurora about them, but perhaps it’s still not enough to result in paid business or work.

How many times as a business do you start the week with the best of intentions, yet when Friday comes nothing is done or complete and you wonder where the week has gone let alone where the days gone?

So you spend the weekend thinking about what needs to be done next week and you have the enthusiasm for Monday to come only to start it again with a fag and a cup of coffee and reading emails.

The structure of the working day is vitally important as it can provide measurement of activities and results, being complacent, despondent or generally lazy isn’t going to help you or your business.

If you constantly allow the seconds to connect to minutes which then connect to hours...you’ll always be wondering “Where’s the day gone?”
