Hype isn't always a good thing as it will un-connect you're business

Many people and businesses start off with the best of intentions, their ideas are unique to them, their capabilities are unique to them, the way in which they intent their business, its products and services to operate are unique to them....well let us just say” oh really”.

Fact is all business think that it's they who are unique so let’s shout about it..... the truth is their not, the harsh reality of truth is people listen to what’s said and think otherwise its human nature.

In fact by blurting out how great you are....... what it is you can do better than anyone else is doing you more harm than good.

The proof in is in the pudding......!

Talk is cheap......action speaks a thousand words...!

Our first extraordinary example of talking hype is:-

Whilst recently attended a Business Link seminar event at the West Bromwich Football ground, after which we were approached by an online media company who asked “what do you do” to which we replied, “we have a couple of online businesses”.

That in effect lit the light blue touch paper and off they went detailing how they are unique in their approach to SEO, how they have offices in Wolverhampton and London, how they get results.....!

After listening for about 5 minutes and time getting on we asked for a business card, and were told they don’t have any yet – but they did give us a piece of paper from the batch they had been writing out throughout the seminar event with their details on. We then said not to worry that we’d have a look at their website...GUESS THE RESPONSE.....yes you’re right “we don’t have one yet”.

If you don’t have a business card, take their details and email them something rather than handing out a price of paper.

As an online media company don’t go out shouting what you can do for others when you cannot even do it for yourself in the first place.......sort yourselves out first.....!

Our second example of talking hype is:-

In holding discussions with an insurance company for our Need to Sort business, we were being told how absolutely fantastic they were, how they have 25 years experience in the trade. How they have unique policy product which one of the majorly large insurance companies had approached them directly to be the sole UK distributor of this product.

All this is extremely impressive: but again when they hand you a non-branded business card because they are still deciding on a company name. When the email address on that card contains a Hotmail and AOL email addresses, and the fact still six months down the line even though they now have a company name there is still no sign of a website or holding page.........what are you supposed to think....?........”It’s all hype is what springs to mind”.

It’s a shame because in the two examples detailed above - what they were saying maybe 100% true, they may be fantastic, they may be unique what the have and do......they may be the best thing since slide bread........then again they may not...! As said before action speaks louder as talk is cheap.

We here as Prequire have faced the same, we have spoken out too earlier due to our own eagerness and excitement, not what we can do we hasten to add – but what our plans and ambitions are for Connect WM and Need to Sort.....building the hype...only for us to fall flat on our faces, because not happening when they should, being let down by suppliers.

For us, we decided to withdraw from the public face or a short while to allow us to get some elements of our business models functional and fully operable.

We know only too well because of this - there are those who will think that we were all hype, which when looking back we were, but not intentional. As we were acting on what we were being told by our suppliers....but in people eyes, this is no excuse and rightly so....!

In conclusion, our view is: - Hype only works if you can do what you say if you cannot back it up – save your breath as you’ll do less damage.
