Last Shop Standing launch sell-out heralds worldwide success

Made in Birmingham film ‘Last Shop Standing’, launched to sell-out shows in the city, is attracting a following around the world.

People had to be turned away from shows at the city’s Electric Cinema, and the turnout to see the film at the Edgbaston Mac’s ‘Departure Lounge’ (on October 25) forced an extra night’s showing.

The independently-produced film charts the rise, fall and rebirth of local record shops, and shows people prefer the personal touch over globalisation.

Roger Shannon, of the West Midlands’ Film Producers’ Forum, who organised the Mac launch, said: “Last Shop Standing is hitting cinemas around the country and attracting great write-ups in the national Press. Director Pip Piper is a stalwart of independent film production.”

Last Shop Standing Director Pip, of Blue Hippo Media, who staged a Q and A session to an enthusiastic audience of fans at the Mac after the showing, said:  “Last Shop Standing is attracting interest as far away as South Korea. We are having sell out showings. It feels good.” The film is released on DVD.

“Last Shop Standing” is a documentary film, from multi award-winning film company, Blue Hippo Media, based in Digbeth.

It features music industry icons including Paul Weller, showing what has been lost by changes in the music industry, from the heyday of over 2,000 shops, to just under 300 by the mid 2000’s. It reveals how the resurgence of vinyl is leading to a potential revival.

Local record fair organiser and collector Dave Grindi said: “The film is an absolute triumph: it is extremely well put together, and beautifully paced.”
