Baylis Automotive (Smethwick) secures £35m contract

Baylis Automotive, a manufacturing company based in Smethwick, has successfully secured a massive contract worth over £35m to supply high-level assemblies.

The work will be carried out over the next 7 years and would almost double turnover to around £14.5m per annum from 2014 and onwards.

The contract has been won due to work Baylis Automotive has carried out with its global clients to develop products that will set new and challenging standards in air pollution omitted from trucks and commercial vehicles. On 31st December 2013 Euro VI becomes law throughout Europe and every vehicle has to comply with very stringent emissions.

Baylis Automotive have already proved their worth over the last two years in meeting world-class quality standards on existing product lines. Their success has been recognised by clients and Baylis Automotive are well placed to continue their work in meeting the new legislation. It is also an excellent example of how the firm can compete globally, make investments, create jobs and contribute to the environment.

Raj Desai, Managing Director, said: “the business turnover would almost double from its current £7.5m per annum to around £14.5m per annum from 2014 and onwards. This includes other business wins, which have already been secured.” The contract secures employment for its existing 120 strong work force and will create jobs and re-train the workforce backed by automation of plant and equipment and a double shift pattern.

The contract will also result in a further expansion to the site, having already expanded the current site from 42,000 sqft to 55,000 sqft in the last 6-months. It is expected that a further 15,000 sqft will be added over the coming months taking the site to 70,000 sqft. In addition, Baylis Automotive have already spent £300k on plant investments and set-aside a further £0.25m.

Raj Desai added: “I am absolutely delighted with the win and it’s a real credit to the already committed work force, which have helped the business set new quality standards and make a contribution to the environment.”
